What does your label say?

“Anxiety is who I am”...I heard the words coming from a 21-year old student in our training room last week.
A very ambitious young woman who came to study with us to improve her communication and sales skills so that she could pursue her dream career in real estate.

Little did she know that she would take away much more from the training than just communication skills..

Our training is structured in a way that we start with communication skills, rapport building and conscious language use. In the second part of our training we teach our students a modality which I like to call Emotional Mastery.
A modality that allows us to clear anxiety, negative emotions and limiting beliefs and which is the modality I use in my coaching all the time.

After the presentation and a demo, the time came for the student to practise the technique and as soon as we went to a virtual breakout room, that student broke down in tears. She refused to participate in the exercise and told me she is not ready.
One of the requisites to obtain international certification in this modality is to physically practise the modality and I couldn’t allow her to miss this opportunity without knowing the reasons behind her decision.

She started telling me that she only came to the training to learn how to effectively commnicate, not to work on the emotional load she was holding.
She then told me that since she was 11 years old she’s been seeing therapists and psychologists to help her manage her anxiety. Even the word “therapy” was a trigger for her because of the bad experiences she’s had. She did not want to relive them again and she certainly didn’t expect an easier “way out” of this mode of living to show up in front of her during the training. She panicked.
If you know the Prime Directives of the Unconscious Mind, one of them is that it brings things up for resolution.
This was this girl’s resolution point. Her Unconscious Mind was telling her vividly - let’s get rid of it!

But for her it wasn’t about letting go of anxiety.
It was about facing letting go of her identity: “I have anxiety. This is who I am. I’ve learnt to deal with it.”

We are talking about a 21-year old here!

Now how many of us hold these labels and live by them? Perhaps you have a label yourself?
Whether it’s anxiety like with this girl or “I am an introvert. I am a perfectionist. I am type A personality”, these are all labels that we or others or some online tests give us.

Whatever your label says, I am here to caution you to use these labels carefully and be aware of attaching your identity to them.

Ask yourself:
Is this really true?
When did I decide to glue this label onto my forehead?
Is it serving me well?

It all starts with your awareness so I highly encourage you to do a stock check of your labels as soon as you finish reading this story.

And in case you’re wondering, that girl overcame her breakdown and completed the practice session.
You will have to take my word for it because when I say that when I saw her the next day at the training, it felt as though I was speaking with a different person. I mean it.
The shy, anxious girl opened up her wings so wide that when we were putting her goals in the future using the same technique, she had all the courage and confidence to dream big and take action towards reaching her dreams!

And this is WHY I love what I do!

*The technique used is called Time Line Therapy®. It’s a very effective technique that allows us to release negative emotions such as anger, sadness, fear, hurt, guilt, frustration or anxiety in a matter of minutes, without the need to talk about the problem for hours.
